Sue Mueller, Las Vegas, NV

Planting the Schulwerk
Carl Orff’s visionary teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that
through active participation in speech, song, play, movement and
improvisation the child becomes the active music maker, the
composer.  A Schulwerk forest is always changing, never the same.
Keep your teaching fresh, new and changing while planting new seeds
that grow at students’ suggestions. The Schulwerk offers many varied
ways to teach and extend lessons.  Through canon, rondo,
improvisation and ostinato we will explore, extend and energize
activities aimed at the K-5 grades.

Rick Layton, Annapolis, MD

SINGING AND SAYING, DANCING AND PLAYING
The workshop participants will be actively involved in a number of
experiences including the dramatization of a folk tale, working with
riddles, and dancing/playing an Israeli folk dance.  Additionally a
lively canon will be played and choreographed.  The music used
during part of the workshop will include (but not be restricted to)
pieces from MUSIC FOR CHILDREN, by Carl Orff and Gunild
Keetman.  As this music is at the core of the workshop, participants
will not only learn the music, but will also be involved in discussions
of the musical basis for teaching these pieces to children, and
(perhaps more importantly) how this elemental teaching approach can
be applied to other music as well.
