COME AND MAKE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT!!!!

This session will include innovative strategies from
World Rhythms taught by Gloria Harrison of Rapid
City. All attendees will experience drumming and
rhythms that can become an exciting part of the
curriculum for K-5. Participants will also have the
opportunity to make a Hoop Drum.

Cost of the project is $5.00 per person.

Gloria Harrison graduated from Florence High School and
received her BA in vocal performance from Dakota
Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD. Retired in May,
2003, Gloria taught in Rapid City for 28 years, 1969-
1970 at Meadowbrook Elementary School, 1970-1974 at
West Junior High School, and 1980-2003 choral music
grades 6-8 at Dakota Middle School. She was Artistic
Director of the Rapid City Children's Chorus since it’s
beginning in the summer of 1986 thru 2004. She now
serves on the RCCC board as Director of Education and
Development.

She received Level I certification for World Music
Drumming with Will Schmid in June, 2000, and Level II
certification for World Music Drumming in June, 2001.
She was presented an Award of Excellence from the
South Dakota Association for Middle Level Education on
April 6, 2001 for implementing the World Music
Drumming Curriculum at Dakota Middle School. She was
presented the “Distinguished Service to Music” award
from SDMEA (South Dakota Music Educators
Association) in November, 2003. On January 21, 2005,
South Dakota ACDA presented Mrs. Harrison the
Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution in
choral music in South Dakota.

Gloria and her husband, Loren, live southwest of Rapid
City, and enjoy gardening in their greenhouse and
working in their woodshop.

Come bring your energy and enthusiasm as we join
together in music making and movement through the
wonderful process of Orff Schulwerk. Kid-tested
lessons will be presented that are both practical and
appropriate for diverse classroom situations and ages.
Strategies for incorporating movement, speech,
singing, and instrumental playing will be included
throughout the day with opportunities for
improvisation and composition.

Matt McCoy is currently a working toward a PhD in
Music Education at the University of Oklahoma, in
Norman, OK.  Prior to his time at OU, he taught children
for eighteen years in both public and independent schools
in Virginia, Maryland, Arizona, and Washington, DC.  
Additionally, Matt teaches with the Orff Schulwerk
certification courses at George Mason University and the
University of Northern Colorado.  As a clinician
specializing in Orff process, he is a frequent presenter at
AOSA National Conferences and at local chapter
meetings around the United States.

In this workshop, Denise will share her favorite
singing games and ways to use the games to create,
compose, and teach concepts. You’ll also participate
in listening activities, recorder ensembles, and preK-1
favorites. This session includes a comprehensive
handout with lots of useful ideas. A very practical
workshop and always a lot of fun!

Denise Gagne is a music specialist with 25 years of
experience teaching band, choir and classroom
music from pre-school to College levels. Denise has a
Bachelor of Music from the University of
Victoria, a Bachelor of Education from the University of
Saskatchewan, a Diploma in Music from
the University of Auckland (pending), and a Post
Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Kodaly Level 3)
from the University of Calgary with Lois Choksy. She
has completed Orff Level 3 and additional
Orff training with Cindy Hall, Jay Broeker, Jos Wuytack
and Donna Otto. Denise is the author or
editor of more than 80 publications for K- 6 music
teachers. She has been a workshop presenter
in every Canadian province and territory and more than
35 states. She presents regularly for
Orff and Kodaly workshops, preschool and kindergarten
conferences in Canada, the USA, Europe
and Australia!
