BHAOSA September, 2011 October 22, 2011 Sue Mueller, Las Vegas, NV Planting the Schulwerk Carl Orff’s visionary teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that through active participation in speech, song, play, movement and improvisation the child becomes the active music maker, the composer. A Schulwerk forest is always changing, never the same. Keep your teaching fresh, new and changing while planting new seeds that grow at students’ suggestions. The Schulwerk offers many varied ways to teach and extend lessons. Through canon, rondo, improvisation and ostinato we will explore, extend and energize activities aimed at the K-5 grades. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sue Mueller, BM, MM, OS Level I-III, master class certification, taught K-5 music for the Clark County School District, Las Vegas, Nevada, for 25 years until her 2005 appointment as Assistant Professor of Music Education for the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She is an active presenter for local chapters, state and national AOSA and MENC conferences. Sue teaches Level II basic pedagogy in the UNLV Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education Course, Level I at Samford University, Boise State and Level II Basic and Recorder at Stetson U. She has served on the National Board of Trustees for the American Orff-Schulwerk Association as Region II Representative (1996-1999), National Conference Chairperson (2002 conference), Vice President (2003-2005), President (2005-2007) and was the National Conference Chairperson for the 2010 AOSA Professional Development Conference in Spokane, WA. January 21, 2012 Rick Layton, Annapolis, MD SINGING AND SAYING, DANCING AND PLAYING The workshop participants will be actively involved in a number of experiences including the dramatization of a folk tale, working with riddles, and dancing/playing an Israeli folk dance. Additionally a lively canon will be played and choreographed. The music used during part of the workshop will include (but not be restricted to) pieces from MUSIC FOR CHILDREN, by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. As this music is at the core of the workshop, participants will not only learn the music, but will also be involved in discussions of the musical basis for teaching these pieces to children, and (perhaps more importantly) how this elemental teaching approach can be applied to other music as well. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Richard Layton, Ph.D. is Head of the Fine and Performing Arts Department at the Key School in Annapolis, MD, where he teaches Orff Schulwerk and music theory, and directs the Renaissance Consort and two choirs. In addition to his work with children, Rick teaches undergraduate music theory at the University of Maryland and Orff Schulwerk Certification Programs at Southern Methodist University in Texas and the San Francisco School in California. He is an active clinician and presenter for MENC state conferences and for the American Orff Schulwerk Association's national conferences and chapter workshops. Dr. Layton's international teaching includes courses in Taiwan, Australia, Canada, and the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria.
