                       PLANTING THE SEEDS OF ORFF

PUPPETS & DRUMS!
Laughter and fun are part of the plan as participants explore and experience activities
implementing puppets and drums. Butterfly Puppet Theatre includes demonstrations of
various puppet styles, manipulation exercises, and specific ideas on work and play
between puppets, children, and adults. Drums Alive combines simple dynamic movements
with pulsating rhythms of the drums. Movement, sequential patterning, repetition, and
rhyme are tools to bring the Drums Alive in your classroom.

PLANTING THE SCHULWERK
INSTRUCTOR: Sue Mueller, Las Vegas, Nevada
Keep your teaching fresh, new, and changing while planting new seeds that grow at
students’ suggestions. The Schulwerk offers many and varied ways to teach and extend
lessons. Through canon, rondo, improvisation, and ostinato, we will explore, extend, and
energize activities aimed at grades K-5.

SINGING AND SAYING, DANCING AND PLAYING
INSTRUCTOR: Rick Layton, Annapolis, Maryland
Workshop participants will be actively involved in a number of experiences including the
dramatization of a folk tale, working with riddles, and dancing/playing an Israeli folk
dance. Additionally, a lively canon will be played and choreographed. Participants will
explore pieces from MUSIC FOR CHILDREN, by Orff and Keetman, learning and
discussing the musical basis for teaching these pieces to children, and how this elemental
teaching approach can be applied to other music.

CREATING CONNECTIONS: IDEAS FROM NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Innovative ideas will be shared by AOSA members who attended the National Conference
entitled “Neighbors in Harmony: Creating Connections” in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Lessons for K-5 will be demonstrated and experienced by participants through musical
activities and application of new strategies.

TOTAL HOURS: 16  (2-3 HOUR SESSIONS & 2-5 HOUR SESSIONS)

Please make every effort to be on time. Come a little early to enjoy a snack and visit with
your colleagues.

COST: Graduate credit from Augustana College $90.00. Make out TWO checks;
Augustana College $40.00 and RCAS $50.00.
RECERTIFICATION: $50.00 to RCAS. Persons taking the workshop for recertification
are NOT required to do the written work. Make-up work for absences IS required.

MEMBERSHIP IN THE BLACK HILLS AMERICAN ORFF SCHULWERK
ASSOCIATION IS REQUIRED FOR CREDIT OR STATE RECERTIFICATION FOR
THIS WORKSHOP. The dues and fund raisers of you and your colleagues enable us to
bring in national clinicians. The dues are $25.00 annually.

EVALUATION CRITERIA: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Evaluation will include
attendance, participation, and completion of one of the following: written work,
presentation, project.
NOTE: Only one absence is allowed for this workshop credit. An exception may be made
in case of extenuating circumstances. If this occurs, please contact the instructor who will
make the final decision.

REQUIREMENTS FOR “SATISFACTORY”:
1.        Attendance at all meetings. One absence is allowed if appropriate make-up work is
submitted.
2.        Reasonable participation will be observed.
3.        Completion of one of the following: written work, presentation, project.
All requirements must be submitted by March 25, 2012 with given directions followed.
SEE REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE CREDIT.
UNSATISFACTORY will be given if:
1.        Student has two absences.
2.        Make-up work for absence is not submitted.
3.        Written work is not submitted by March 25, 2012.
4.        No participation is observed.



REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE CREDIT. CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
A. Submit two “review-reaction” papers on music education. A photocopy of the article
must accompany the paper. ORFF related articles from the past 2 years are preferred.
Format: One or two pages per review, typed. Include citation of the article, name and date
of publication, and author.
Review: Introductory paragraph followed by review of main points of the article.
Reaction: Address such questions as impact on professional life and  
agreement/disagreement with the premise of the article.
Evaluation: Based on the selection of an appropriate article, content of the written
assignment, and thoroughness of reaction and format.
B. Choose to make a presentation for the group. Choose materials that you                   
have successfully used with your students. Formulate a handout to be given to the
participants and submit a copy to the instructor. Inform the instructor so that  your
presentation can be scheduled at the March 17th meeting.
C. You may choose to do an individual independent project. This project must be
preapproved by the instructor by January 21, 2012.


MAKE-UP REQUIREMENTS: If you are absent from an 8:30-12:00 session, complete
ONE of the following activities. Participants absent from a 9:00-3:00 session complete
TWO of the choices listed below. Time spent should equal or exceed hours of absence.
1.        Read two articles pertaining to music education. Orff related articles are preferred.
Submit “review-reaction” papers for each article, following criteria listed above in
“requirements”.
2.        Develop a lesson plan which incorporates Orff activities. Identify National Music
Content Standards. State objectives clearly, and select appropriate activities which develop
the objective. State the process of teaching and specify grade level. Include the activities of
singing, playing, moving, and creating. Specify and outline follow-up activities.
3.        Develop and prepare two music-related teaching aids for use in your music
classroom. Attach instructions for use with clearly stated objectives and suggested lesson
incorporation.
CLASSROOM TEACHERS MAKE-UP:
1.        Develop a lesson plan with guidelines in #2 above but develop the plan cross-
curriculum with your choice of subjects.
2.        Develop and prepare two music-related teaching aids for use in your classroom.
Attach instructions describing use, objectives, and suggested lesson incorporation.

MAKE-UP WORK is due to the instructor at the meeting following the absence. If you are
absent on March 17, make-up work is due to the instructor by March 25. Instructor will
not contact you if work is delinquent.
